CRAZY4LOVE

Grad Night

A Rite-of-Passage for Most High School Teenagers
Imagine 14 High School Seniors Locked in a Gym for Eight Hours…
What Could Possibly Go Wrong?
Stripped of Their Cell Phones, They Bare Their Souls To Each Other On The Very Last Night of High School
Fortunately, What Happens at Grad Night Stays At Grad Night…

Crazy4Love, an evening of seamless drama, song, and dance, is set from dusk to dawn during Grad Night, the “all bets are off” lockdown party for most high school seniors that immediately follows graduation, with no rules, no parents, and no chaperones. Having survived and thrived Covid, an active shooter episode, freedom of speech issues, the #MeToo and Black Lives Matter movements, and the awakening of both their sexual identities and political awareness, these Gen Zers are about to be unleashed into the universe – with plenty of questions and unknowns swirling through the air.

On this last night of high school, all the drama of the past four years ignites a firestorm of emotions. Hearts will be broken, romances ignited, secrets revealed, scores settled, and long-simmering rivalries will explode in non-stop song, dance, and dialogue. Grad Night is everyone’s last chance to party together before leaving for the rest of their lives. The vibe is “Now is all that matters…”

Crazy4Love relives those last magical, innocent moments of youth where romance and passion rule all.

AUTHOR’S NOTE: In Act One, Yearbook Editor EMMA is furious that school officials censored her essay in the yearbook. Class sweethearts MIKE and AVA are in an uproar over their relationship. BRENT and PAIGE have broken up. Newly “out” lesbian TRACY has to fend off her male classmates’ advances as she goes out on her first same-sex date with LGBTQ+ activist LINDSAY. Class nerds WESLEY & EMMA have just discovered each other. WILL, a popular classmate, has been nursing a secret all night (he’s been homeless since junior year), and CLAIR is determined to find out what it is. Trans female WINIFRED struggles with her new identity, as Cuban exchange student ARMANDO is determined to break up the class super couple before he returns to Cuba. Gay BFFs JOSH & TOBY are determined to fix everyone’s problems but their own. In the climax of Act One, our female leads, PAIGE and CLAIR, have had a massive confrontation in which CLAIR reveals that PAIGE is a cutter and PAIGE tells everyone that CLAIR had professional help taking her college entrance exams. The public brawl triggers PAIGE’s PTSD, and she has a vivid recall of the active shooter episode from junior year, from which she barely escaped with her life. The climax of Act One finds everyone in the surreal “Festiva Romantica” party room with all of our characters at odds with each other.

Physical Production Notes

THE STAGE

14 vertical photo panels ring the empty proscenium stage, each serving as the social media page for one of our 14 characters. These panels will refresh constantly throughout the show, providing the audience with photo scrapbooks for each character, fleshing out their backgrounds and supporting each song. At the top of the show, we will also see their individual graduation pictures from the recent ceremony. The photos will morph from stiff “cap & gown” portraits to raucous, informal photos taken of the Gen Zers following graduation.

THE SETTING

Crazy4Love is set in a Midwest high school on Grad Night, the all-night, lockdown, no-chaperone party that traditionally immediately follows most graduations. The theme of this Grad Night is Fiesta Romantica. Several different locales and carnival amusements serve as backdrops for the various scenes, including: a Gym Dance Floor, Food Court, Photo Booth, Tattoo Parlor, Game Room, Blackjack Room, Lounge Area, Psychic Parlor, and Coffee Bar. Throughout the evening, signs will drop down from the fly space identifying each playing space. The orchestra is placed far upstage. For various musical numbers, members of the orchestra will come downstage with their instruments to accompany the cast members during the musical numbers.

SOCIAL MEDIA

Mounted on the side “legs” of the wings, video screens feature Bluesky-style video clips of each character. The rear stage wall will contain a gigantic video screen displaying video of the dance sequences captured by cameras mounted above the stage, from the wings, and on the balcony rail. On both sides of the proscenium arch, two video screens will provide close-ups of the two-character scenes, heightening the intimacy of each scene. In the background of these scenes, members of the Ensemble provide a non-stop party atmosphere – mingling, dancing, chit-chatting, and enjoying Grad Night.

DANCE ELEMENT

Non-stop dance and movement will stitch the evening together, including classic Broadway show dancing, tap, tango, salsa, mambo, ballet, jazz, and country western line dancing, among other ballroom and dance styles.

Track #14: WHERE’S THE FIRE? – Will, Paige & Ensemble

PAIGE
WHAT’S THE PLAN? GOT A PLAN?
WHAT YOU GONNA PURSUE?

WILL
TELL ME NOW, TELL ME NOW
DO YOU EVEN HAVE A CLUE?

PAIGE / WILL
FIND A JOB, GOOD JOB, WORKING FOR THE PAY
PUNCH THE CLOCK UNTIL YOUR HAIR IS TURNING GRAY

PAIGE / WILL + ENSEMBLE
WHERE’S THE FIRE?
WHERE’S THE FIRE?
WHERE’S THE FIRE
HEY!

At the end of the song, EVERYONE drifts off, and Will and PAIGE are centerstage.

WILL (to PAIGE)
How is it possible that none of us knew you were cutting yourself?

PAIGE
I told Ava and Emma, but I didn’t want anyone else to know. Cutting myself was my way of dealing with my pain. It was not a cry for help. It actually made me feel alive.

WILL
And you never felt that you could come to me?

PAIGE
I didn’t want you or anyone else to know. Brent’s been triggering my PTSD ever since the active shooter episode. He’s been unfaithful since the very beginning of our relationship. We were the golden couple. How could I admit to everyone that Brett was actually my biggest nightmare?

WILL
Help is always at our fingertips. Well, speak of the devil.

(BRENT enters with CLAIR on his arm, and they go off in a corner, nuzzling each other as EMMA and AVA walk up to WILL and PAIGE.)

PAIGE (close to breaking down)
Our last night together is nothing like I thought it would turn out.

EMMA
Yeah, Brent takes one drink and then makes out with your worst enemy right in your face. Great party! Remind me to RSVP “no” next year.

PAIGE
This is just an absolute nightmare. Brent and I are finished.

AVA
Why am I not surprised?

(WILL watches as AVA’s face suddenly reveals her inner turmoil and she abruptly turns away from the other girls.)

PAIGE (wiping her eyes)
I need some good, strong coffee. Come on, Emma, let’s hit the coffee bar.

(PAIGE and EMMA exit, leaving WILL and AVA.)

WILL (to AVA)
What’s eating away at you?

AVA
I’ve got to tell somebody…I think I may be pregnant.

WILL (shocked)
Pregnant? (pause).

AVA
I missed my period this month, and I don’t think I have the courage to face Mike now.

WILL
Where’s the courage you had when you posted that swimsuit magazine cover photo on Instagram this year and asked the entire world if they had an eating disorder.

AVA
It’s gone, I guess. Pregnancy was so not in our plan.

WILL
Do you believe Mike loves you?

AVA
Yes, but we were so careful. I’m not sure he’ll understand.

WILL
If I were you, I’d trust your gut about him and not assume anything.

(WILL gives AVA a hug and wanders off.)

Act Two, Scene 2 – Coffee Bar

Instagram Feed: Romantic photos of Mike & Ava.

SCENE NOTE: BRENT enters, takes a slug from his flask, and walks up to AVA and gives her a kiss on the lips just as MIKE, PAIGE, and EMMA enter. AVA struggles to extricate herself from the embarrassing situation.

MIKE
Hands off my lady, asshole.

BRENT
Hey, since it’s the last night of high school, I just thought I’d…

(MIKE pushes BRENT back with a finger in his chest, then goes nose to nose with him.)

MIKE
You thought you’d what? That’s the problem, dude, you don’t think.

PAIGE (to BRENT) You’re really stepping over the line here.

AVA (to MIKE) It’s Grad Night…please don’t make any trouble.

MIKE
I’m not makin’ any trouble, but anybody else makes trouble on Grad Night, and I’ll shut him down. Now you owe Paige an apology.

BRENT (dismissively to PAIGE)
I’m sorry. Look, we’re here until 6 AM, so let’s call a truce, and I’ll drive you home when Grad Night’s over.

PAIGE
No, I’ll find my own way home.

BRENT (incredulous)
What?

PAIGE
You and I are finished. Finito.

(As BRENT exits, he shrugs and takes a gulp from his flask. MIKE turns to AVA. Meanwhile, TOBY & JOSH enter.)

MIKE
Classy guy…real classy guy.

AVA
Sorry, I sounded off, but I know how bad your temper can be when you’re upset.

MIKE
Brent almost found out how bad my temper can be, all right.

AVA
That’s one bad quality you got for sure from your dad…I’m sorry, I didn’t mean that.

(AVA moves close to MIKE, while he gently but firmly pulls back.)

MIKE
Listen, I need a couple of minutes to cool down. I’ll see you later.

(MIKE joins a line of country line dancers in the background leaving AVA by herself as TOBY & JOSH approach AVA.)

TOBY
Has our Miss Ava been misbehavin’?

(AVA silently nods her head.)

JOSH
As your stylists for Prom and Grad Night, we don’t need A.I. to see that things are not quite right.

(AVA nods her head.)

TOBY
So we’re guessing that we missed our period, right?

(AVA nods again.)

JOSH (nuzzling with TOBY)
Well, there’s no problem in the world that a pair of strong arms around you can’t make right.

TOBY
You and Mike complete each other. Together, you can face anything. It’s gonna take some real courage.

(AVA silently nods her head again.)

JOSH
We’ve all watched you make goo-goo eyes at each other since middle school. Now go fix things, girl. You can do it!

Track #15 – WEAK IN THE KNEES – Ava (solo)

AVA
FIRST TIME I SAW YOU WALKIN’ DOWN THE STREET
DON’T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED
THAT NIGHT I STARTED LOSIN’ SLEEP
SOMETHIN’ ‘BOUT THE WAY YOU MOVE GOT TO ME

FIRST TIME I HEARD YOU SOFTLY CALL MY NAME
I CAN STILL HEAR IT
IT SET MY LONELY HEART AFLAME
SOMETHIN’ ‘BOUT THAT VOICE OF YOURS
GOT TO ME

I STILL GET WEAK IN THE KNEES
CATCH ME, I’M FALLIN’! HEARTACHE IS CALLING
I GET SO WEAK IN THE KNEES

(AVA exits as PAIGE enters, followed by ARMANDO.)

Act Two, Scene 3 – Gym Dance Floor

ARMANDO (trying to play PAIGE)
You look at Brent with such sad eyes. It hurts me to see you so unhappy. Brent’s selfish behavior has caused you such great heartache. It just makes me so angry.

PAIGE
Thanks, Armando, I appreciate your saying that. Brent did break my heart tonight of all nights, but now I’m determined to move on. I apologize if I was rude to you tonight.

ARMANDO
In Havana, we have a cure for such heartache. Come, take my hand, and let me show you how.

Track #16 – COME LOSE YOUR HEART IN HAVANA – Armando & Ensemble

DANCE NOTES: “Come Lose Your Heart in Havana” will feature an extensive display of high-energy Spanish dancing – mambo, samba, salsa, etc., culminating in an all-male shirtless flamenco dance led by ARMANDO. During this extended fantasy dance number, the stage will explode with the sights and sounds of an Old Havana street fair. Off to the side, a miserable BRENT watches as PAIGE, dancing with abandon, begins to smile and laugh. Brass musicians from the orchestra will come downstage with their instruments and join in the fun.

ARMANDO
COME LOSE YOUR HEART IN HAVANA
UNDER THE STARRY SKIES
FEEL THE BREEZE THROUGH THE PALM TREES
SOFT AS A LULLABY

YOU’LL LOSE YOUR HEART IN HAVANA
ON THE VERY FIRST DAY
TAKE MY HAND TO THE ISLAND
WE’LL DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY!

Act Two, Scene 4 – Game Room

(PAIGE is centerstage and BRENT approaches her.)

BRENT
Don’t even know what to say this time. Alcohol always makes me…

(PAIGE cuts BRENT off as WILL quietly enters.)

PAIGE (unloading on Brent)
Stop using alcohol as an excuse. Are you aiming for another blackout like prom night? You need help, but I’m done. Let Clair pick up the pieces this time.

BRENT
You’ve always picked up the pieces before.

PAIGE
From now on, I take no responsibility for anyone but myself. Help is at your fingertips. Go and find it. The decision is yours.

(As PAIGE leaves, WILL approaches BRENT)

WILL
Brent, you’ve got a big decision to make, and a decision requires action — action you’ve successfully avoided for years. You’ve got a rich old man who’s brought you out of every catastrophe you’ve ever created. And now the class drunk is going to take over a pot empire. Tell me how that’s gonna go.

(BRENT is silent).

WILL (exasperated) Well, what can you expect from privileged neglect?

(WILL exits, leaving BRENT completely demoralized.)

Track #17 – WHAT’S A MAN GOTTA DO – Brent (solo)

DANCE NOTES: BRENT is backed up by Male Ensemble dancers, still shirtless from the “Havana” number, who are doing a very slow, sexy, jazzy dance number. During the number, a musician from the orchestra will join Brent onstage and play a mean jazz riff on his saxophone.
Instagram Feed: We see photos of Brent throughout his young life, through all of his various life milestones, in particular the sports he excelled at, but always with his beaming father featured prominently.

BRENT
DANCIN’ HALF THE NIGHT AWAY
ACHIN’ IN YOUR ARMS
DRIVIN’ HOME AT THE BREAK OF DAY
SITTIN’ CLOSE, I CAN FEEL YOUR CHARMS
A BREEZE CAN’T COOL MY POUNDIN’ HEART
AS WE KISS OUTSIDE YOUR DOOR
YOUR FOOTSTEPS ECHO AS YOU WALK AWAY
AND MY HEART CRIES OUT FOR MORE

HOW DO I END THIS PAIN IN MY HEART?
HOW DO I GET CLOSE TO YOU?
SOMETHIN’S KEEPIN’ US APART
WON’CHA TELL ME – WHAT’S A MAN GOTTA DO?

(At the end of the song, CLAIR enters and quietly consoles BRENT. They walk off arm in arm.)

Act Two, Scene 5 – Food Court

SCENE NOTE: The Food Court has many colorful signs featuring delicious snacks, treats, and desserts. Sexily clad ENSEMBLE members move through the crowd delivering drinks and snacks.

Instagram Feed: LINDSAY & TRACY in love, JOSH & TOBY in love. WINIFRED (as Fred) as a chick magnet before their transition.
.
(WINIFRED, LINDSAY & TRACY and JOSH & TOBY enter together.)

JOSH
Boy, this Grad Night has certainly stirred up a lot of shit, hasn’t it?

LINDSAY
Maybe so, but it may be the start of something beautiful for Tracy and me. That’s what I’m focused on.
`
TRACY
And I’m getting more comfortable with that idea by the minute.

TOBY
What’s your next move, Winifred?

WINIFRED
Fuck this yearbook censorship shit, I’m starting a sports broadcasting major at Northwestern in the fall.

LINDSAY
From all-state tight end to the first trans woman in sports broadcasting. Be still, my heart!

WINIFRED
You got it. Did you think that just because I changed my gender that I’d change my career plans?

(They all laugh and high-five each other.)

JOSH
And your parents are down with this?

WINIFRED
My dad is down for anything as long as he gets free tickets, and my mother finally has someone to go clothes shopping with…

(THEY all LAUGH.)

TOBY
Seriously, Lins, I heard your parents practically disowned you tonight. What’s going on?

LINDSAY
I always dreamed of going to umpire school down in Florida. But the cost is way out of my ballpark now that I’m on my own.

TRACY
For now, Lins, for now. We’ll figure something out. Together.

(As LINDSAY & TRACY kiss, JOSH & TOBY, and WINIFRED survey the couples necking on the recliners and sofas around them.)

JOSH
Let’s stir the pot here, huh, Toby and Winifred?

TOBY
You know it’s what we do best.

LINDSAY
This is our last night together – ever. We’ve been aching to cut loose for four years now

WINIFRED
Let’s give them a story they can share with their grandkids…

ALL (high-fiving each other)
Yes!!!!

Track #18 – SOME O’ THIS, SOME O’THAT – Lindsay & Tracey, Winifred, Josh & Toby

SCENE NOTE: During this provocative dance number, Lindsay & Tracy, Winifred, and Josh & Toby will compete with each other to entice the Ensemble members to let go of their sexual and social inhibitions and release their wildest fantasies.

WINIFRED
WHEN YOU’RE CRAVIN’ SOMETHING
AND YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO…
ACHIN’ FOR A TASTE O’ SOMETHIN’…SWEET

TRACY / LINDSAY
TAKE A LOOK AROUND, IT IS RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU

JOSH / TOBY
TAKE A NIBBLE, MAKE YOUR DAY COMPLETE…

ALL
GIMME SOME O’ THIS, SOME O’ THIS,
SOME O’ THAT,
GIMME SOME OF THIS
‘N’ SOME OF THAT

Act Two, Scene 6 – Lounge

SCENE NOTE: MIKE and AVA (separately) wander into the Lounge, which has lots of couches, lazy boy recliners for our characters to relax in and make out. In the background, ENSEMBLE members are cowboy line dancing.

AVA (to MIKE)
I’ve got something very important to tell you.

MIKE
You landed the Lifestyle Expo gig and are headed to New York? Please, I can’t take one more bit of good news.

AVA
Babe, I need you to look me in the eye.

(This stops MIKE in his tracks.)

MIKE (now serious)
What is it, Ava?

AVA
I missed my period this week, so I just took a pregnancy test, and it came back positive.

(MIKE is stunned into silence.)

AVA (cont.
I know it’s not what we planned for…and I know you have your heart set on that NASCAR job.

MIKE
The NASCAR gig was never a sure thing…and there’s always next year.

AVA
I don’t know what to say…I feel like it’s all my fault.

(MIKE embraces AVA as her eyes fill with tears.)

MIKE
What you can say is that you love me, you always will, and that we’ll see this thing through together; that’s what unconditional love is all about. We’ll make our own decision. Nobody else.

AVA (seductively)
I know that you’ll show the same courage you showed racing your car every Friday night at 3 AM.

MIKE
What!?! Who told you? That asshole Brent?

AVA
No, I put a nanny camera under your front hood. Having helicopter parents did teach me something!

MIKE
I do love you…and I love your twisted mind!!!

AVA
It doesn’t make sense for us to be apart. Josh and Toby got that right.

Track #19 – CAN’T STOP ME – Mike & Ava (duet)

Instagram Feed: Mike & Ava in love

DANCE NOTES: Country Line dancing for the ENSEMBLE. Two musicians with guitars come downstage to join the actors.

MIKE
THEY COULD BEAT ME UP ‘N’ BRAIN ME,
TIE ME UP ‘N’ CHAIN ME
DROP ME IN THE DEEP BLUE SEA
KICK ME DOWN THE HIGHWAY
NEVER GONNA FLY ‘WAY
YOU MEAN THAT MUCH TO ME
I’M A MAN – AND YOU’RE HERE IN MY HEART
THEY DON’T KNOW – CAN’T TEAR US APART
CAN’T STOP ME
THOUGH THEY TRY AND TRY
CAN’T STOP ME
NO USE IN ASKIN’ WHY
BETTER BELIEVE THAT WHAT I SAY IS TRUE
THEY CAN’T STOP ME…FROM LOVIN’ YOU

(MIKE and AVA join hands and run off.)

Act Two, Scene 7 – Tattoo Parlor

Instagram Feed: Fun photos of WESLEY & EMMA in love.

SCENE NOTE: WESLEY & EMMA enter with LINDSAY & TRACY, followed by ARMANDO, who walks
up to WESLEY and gives him a shove that sends him sprawling. This attracts a large crowd around them.

ARMANDO (loudly)
Everyone, look what’s happening here. The big man on campus has taken a mighty fall. What’s
the lesson here? Don’t ever mess with Armando!

WESLEY
What’s going on?

(A seething EMMA helps a shaken WESLEY up.)

EMMA
Hey, Armando, here’s something I know you’ll appreciate.

(EMMA grabs ARMANDO’s arm and flips him with a jiu jitsu move so that he does a complete
mid-air somersault, landing on his butt, with EMMA still holding onto his wrist.)

EMMA (cont.)
I think you need to apologize to Wesley.

ARMANDO
Never gonna happen in a million years.

(EMMA twists ARMANDO’s wrist until he cries out in pain.)

ARMANDO (half-heartedly) OW! Okay, okay, I’m sorry, I’m sorry!

EMMA
Gee, I don’t think they could hear you back in the cheap seats.

(EMMA twists ARMANDO’s wrist again.)

ARMANDO
YEOW!!! I’M SORRY, DAMMIT!

(LINDSAY and TRACY and the other onlookers burst out in CHEERS and APPLAUSE. LINDSAY feints a punch at ARMANDO, who ducks and slinks off as EMMA takes a bow.)

WESLEY
How’d you do that? I’m blown away.

EMMA
I already told you. Older brothers – did I say five?

WESLEY
I owe you big time, along with Lindsay and Tracy.

EMMA (suddenly inspired)
That’s really sweet. Now you may be able to thank Lindsay in a way that could really change their lives.

WESLEY
What do you mean?

EMMA
Well, Lindsay has had your back ever since middle school. Now they really, really need your help – to put it bluntly – Lins needs exactly $5,000 for baseball umpire school in Florida, and Tracy needs tuition for aesthetician school.

WESLEY
What do you want me to do?

EMMA
I know you’re sitting on $10,0000 cash from that poker championship last weekend. Tonight, you can change Lindsay and Tracy’s lives forever by making their dreams happen! You can win all that money back this weekend…with my help!

WESLEY (suddenly inspired)
Of course! Of course! Early Merry Christmas, Lindsay! Tracy!

LINDSAY & TRACY (ad-libbing)
Thank you, Thank you so much!

(LINDSAY and TRACY each give WESLEY a quick hug, then run off, talking excitedly to each other.)

WESLEY
I haven’t had a night like this in the past four years! I don’t want it to end!

EMMA
Now let’s talk about that internship at JPL this summer.

WESLEY (laughing)
I’m all ears!

(EMMA & WESLEY lock eyes for a moment, then EMMA leans forward and they kiss, softly, tenderly.)

WESLEY
Wow. You’re really something. Is this what I’ve been missing the past four years?

EMMA (slyly) Lucky at cards…lucky in love…

(WESLEY laughs, then hugs EMMA for a moment.)

Track #20 – LOOK WHAT’S HAPPENING HERE – Wesley & Emma duet

Instagram Feed: Photos of WESLEY and EMMA throughout their high school years.

WESLEY
BEEN SITTIN’ NEXT TO YOU EVERY DAY IN SCHOOL
SO IT COMES TO ME AS QUITE A SURPRISE
NEVER SAW THE LIGHT SHININ’ IN YOUR HAIR
NEVER SAW THE STARS IN YOUR EYES

NEVER HEARD THE MUSIC IN YOUR LAUGH
BUT TONIGHT YOU LOOK TO ME JUST LIKE A PHOTOGRAPH
YOU AND ME? COULD IT BE?
ME AND YOU? WHAT WE GONNA DO?
GOOD GOD ALMIGHTY – LOOK WHAT’S HAPPENIN’ HERE

(WESLEY & EMMA each get matching tattoos.)

Act Two, Scene 8 – Gym Dance Floor

SCENE NOTE: (EMMA & WESLEY, and MIKE & AVA enter in one group, followed by LINDSAY & TRACY and WINIFRED in a second group, followed by WILL and PAIGE (together) and CLAIR and BRENT (together). Everyone is in high spirits. JOSH & TOBY and ARMANDO mingle in the background)

EVERYONE sings as they drift in. This song will be spread over the next scenes.

Track #21 – GOOD NIGHT, GOODBYE – Ensemble

ENSEMBLE
GOODNIGHT, GOODBYE,
THE TIME WE SHARED IS OVER
DRY YOUR EYES
SOON ANOTHER DAY

SO DARK THE SKY
STARS SHINE DOWN UPON US
THE MOON IS HIGH
GUIDES US ON OUR WAY

GOODNIGHT, GOODBYE
GOODNIGHT, GOODBYE
GOODNIGHT, GOODBYE
IT’S ANOTHER DAY…

(WINIFRED enters)

WINIFRED
Mike and AVA are $1,000 richer, not to mention the two round-trip plane tickets to NYC. Adios FINALLY to Armando, who goes home to Havana tomorrow. And there’s one final poll we haven’t announced, “Favorite Classmate” which, of course, everyone voted to award to Will Simmons. Hey, somebody go find Will…

(JOSH starts to go look for WILL, but CLAIR stops him.)

CLAIR (quietly)
Wait! Hold off, Josh. Before Will gets here, I want to say something since these are our last few moments together. Will told me something earlier tonight that really bothered me…that I always mess things up just because I can. The latest is that I totally embarrassed Paige in front of everyone.

(EVERYONE is in shock.)

PAIGE (sincerely)
And I’ll admit that I’ve made Clair’s life miserable ever since freshman year. I just wasn’t ready for the threat you posed in terms of my relationship with Brent.

CLAIR
Well, I never looked to win any popularity contests. Now I’m gonna say the words I swore I’d never say to any of you…I’m sorry. I’m sorry for all the hurt I’ve caused. I don’t want to leave tonight behind without coming clean.

PAIGE
Fair enough. And I’m down with saying I’m sorry for all the grief I caused you. I’m glad you mentioned Will. Has anyone else noticed what I have been picking up on these past two years?

MIKE
Like…Will giving up varsity soccer in his junior year?

LINDSAY
Like…Will working a full-time job this past year?

BRENT
Taking showers in the locker room every morning?

EMMA
Seems like he vanished right in front of our eyes

TRACY
I’m just guessing that the guy that was always ready to help each of us solve all our problems might have some big problems of his own.

(WILL approaches.)

PAIGE (whispering)
Here he comes, Clair, help me out.

(PAIGE and CLAIR exchange a conspiratorial look as WILL enters.)

WILL
What’s up, everyone? Y’all look like you’ve just been given detention.

WINIFRED
I was just about to announce that you won the Favorite Classmate poll.

WILL
What? No, please. I’m not looking for any pats on the back.

CLAIR
Actually, we’re not looking to pat you on the back… maybe kick you in the butt ‘cause we’d just like to finally get the facts straight.

(WILL is like a deer frozen in the headlights.)

CLAIR (Cont.)
Paige, want to start us out?

PAIGE
If there’s one thing on which Clair and I can agree.

(JOSH and TOBY can’t resist and high-five each other!)

JOSH & TOBY (together)
Sweet!!!

PAIGE
It’s that we…all of us.

CLAIR
We all love you, Will, we really love you, and we’re afraid something bad has happened to you.

WILL (stammering) I don’t know what you’re…

PAIGE
The truth, WiIl.

CLAIR
Tell us what is really going on…before we beat it out of you.

(EVERYONE laughs nervously.)

CLAIR (cont.) You all think I’m kidding?

(WILL turns to face the audience.)

WILL
If you all must know…I’ve been…(pause)…I’ve been homeless since junior year. Ever since the active shooter episode. My parents kicked me out because I trashed the gun lobby, and I’ve been living in my car ever since. I’ve been too embarrassed to let anyone know.

(EVERYONE is thunderstruck.)

WILL (cont.)
I couldn’t go along with their politics and religious beliefs.

PAIGE (pointedly)
So you didn’t feel you could come to us and ask for help? Help that was literally at your fingertips, like you are always telling each one of us?

EMMA
You could have had any of my older brothers’ rooms when they went off to college.

TRACY`
Or the family room in our basement.

CLAIR
So the person who was always there for us when we needed him couldn’t ask us for help.

WILL
I was too proud to ask any of you for help…Tomorrow I’m gonna….

PAIGE
Will…you taught me to believe in the moment. The past is finished. There is no TOMORROW. There’s only TODAY! And it’s forever!

WILL
You all saved me when I really needed saving. And now I see I can’t do it alone.

Track #22 – HELP ME RISE UP – Will, Paige & Ensemble

Instagram Feed: – During the song, the various Instagram screens will flash photos of our characters involved with social service orgs or initiatives in the future.

WILL
COULD YOU HELP ME RISE UP?
DROP SOME TRUST IN MY CUP?
I’M WORN AND I’M WEAK AND I’M WEARY
CAN’T DO IT ALONE
MY DREAMS HAVE ALL FLOWN
AND THE NIGHT IS SO DARK AND SO DREARY

PAIGE
WON’T YOU HELP ME RISE UP?
PUT SOME HOPE IN MY CUP?
HELP ME TO MAKE IT THROUGH
IF LIFE TAKES A TURN
AND BECOMES A CONCERN
I’M GLAD TO DO AS MUCH FOR YOU

WILL & PAIGE & ENSEMBLE
WON’T YOU HELP ME RISE UP, RISE UP
RISE UP, RISE UP (I’LL RISE)
WON’T YOU HELP ME RISE UP,
RISE UP, RISE UP (I’LL RISE)
WON’T YOU HELP ME RISE UP,
RISE UP, RISE UP (I’LL RISE).
RISE UP!
